Wigmore Hall announces Nash Ensemble as Chamber Ensemble in Residence
John Gilhooly, Director of Wigmore Hall, today announced that the Nash Ensemble – widely regarded as one of Europe’s pre-eminent chamber ensembles – is to become the Hall’s chamber ensemble in residence from September 2010.
John Gilhooly said:
“The Nash has built up a remarkable reputation as one of the finest and most adventurous of British ensembles, and through the dedication and vision of its Founder and Artistic Director Amelia Freedman, and the outstanding quality and commitment of its players, the Ensemble has gained a reputation worldwide.
The residency at Wigmore Hall recognises our important relationship with the group in the past, and through the years ahead.”
Amelia Freedman, said:
“The Nash Ensemble’s longstanding relationship with Wigmore Hall has been central to the group’s success over the years. I am delighted that this relationship has been recognised with an official residency, at one of the most prestigious and beloved venues in the world, which has been for years, our unofficial London home.”
The Nash Ensemble’s 2010/11 Wigmore Hall season, which starts on 26 September 2010, explores Beethoven’s link to Russia, and his influence on Russian chamber music. The Ensemble will combine music by Beethoven with works from the rich Russian tradition, presenting well-known masterpieces and lesser-known gems.
On 23 March 2011 in the Nash Inventions concert, the Ensemble presents three world premieres by leading British composers – Simon Holt, Michael Berkeley and David Matthews. This is followed by a special late-night jazz concert, celebrating the 75th Birthday of Sir Richard Rodney Bennett with his long-term collaborator, the singer Claire Martin. They are joined by a jazz trio, members of the Nash with John Wilson conductor, performing special arrangements by Bennett from the Great American Songbook.
