Amjad Ali Khan Review and Wigmore Hall Live CD
Last week, Amjad Ali Khan launched his series at Wigmore Hall exploring Indian Classical Music. In a 5* review of this concert for The Independent, Michael Church praised Amjad Ali Khan as a true ambassador for the sarod just as Ravi Shankar was for the sitar. Preceded by a performance by the kuchipudi dancer Yamini Reddy, in which she “brilliantly combined the two main elements of this South Indian dance form – virile force and feminine expressiveness”, she “moved from pose to pose like an animated statue; the Wigmore’s ornate art-nouveau cupola might have been designed to set off the beauty of her act.”
Amjad Ali Khan was later joined by his two sons Amaan and Ayaan; “If a fine performance of a raga is described as “pakka”, meaning “cooked” or “perfected” – hence our imported adjective “pukkah” – this was an eminently pukkah performance.”
Of the evening, Michael Church wrote “the remarkable thing about both dancer and sarodist was the way their essentially devotional art joyfully celebrated the here-and-now.”
Amjad Ali Khan on Wigmore Hall Live
Following the performance, Amjad Ali Khan and his sons signed CDs, including the latest release on the Wigmore Hall Live Label, which features all three artists with tabla player Satyajit Talwalar.
