The 2013/14 Season opens on Saturday 7 September with Simon Keenlyside and Bryn Terfel in a joint recital with Malcolm Martineau. Steven Isserlis will be the central figure in ‘Music in the Shadow of War’, a series of concerts exploring the music of the 1930s, with works fuelled by faith in the transforming power of art itself. ‘Songlives’ features works drawn from specific years or across a single composer’s creative life as we dig deep beneath the surface of songs by Schumann, Debussy, Schubert and Strauss. Other highlights include a tribute to the life and work of Wigmore Hall Medallist Menahem Pressler, the return of baritone Matthias Goerne after a three-year absence, a recital by Mitsuko Uchida with Musicians from the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, and an exploration of the keyboard works of JS Bach by András Schiff. We also look forward to welcoming Julian Anderson as Composer in Residence, Marc-André Hamelin as Artist in Residence, and an expanded Early Music and Baroque series crowned by Les Arts Florissants and William Christie, Les Talens Lyriques and L’Arpeggiata.
