Biography: Thomas Quasthoff
German bass-baritone Thomas Quasthoff is recognised as one of the most remarkable singers of his generation and appears frequently with the world’s leading orchestras under the most renowned conductors such as Barenboim, Haitink, Harding, Jansons, Muti, Rattle, Thielemann and Welser-Möst.
His début in 1995 at the Oregon Bach Festival laid the basis for his highly successful career in the USA. In 2003 he gave his highly acclaimed opera début in the role of (Don Fernando) Fidelio at the Salzburg Easter Festival. His remarkable début at the Vienna Staatsoper in the role of (Amfortas) Parsifal followed in 2004. In 2011/12 he appears in solo recitals with Justus Zeyen, Lars Vogt, András Schiff as well as with Daniel Barenboim, and in duo recitals with tenor Michael Schade throughout Europe and the USA.
On the concert platform, he sings Mendelssohn’s Elias with Rilling, Mahler’s Kindertotenlieder with Boreyko, Bach’s Weihnachtsoratorium with Thielemann and performances with the Mahler Chamber orchestra and WDR Bigband touring throughout Europe. With the Vienna Philharmonic he sings Schönberg’s Gurrelieder under Mehta and Haydn’s Jahreszeiten under Muti.
As of 1999 Thomas Quasthoff has an exclusive recording contract with the Deutsche Grammophon. Three of his numerous CDs have received the coveted Grammy award. The artist holds a professorship at the Hanns Eisler Music University in Berlin. For many years, he has dedicated himself to Lied, why he has founded a Lied-Competition in 2009. Further, he was appointed Österreichischer Kammersänger by the Austrian government.
