About the Competition

Wigmore Hall has been responsible for the triennial International String Quartet Competition (formerly The London International String Quartet Competition) since July 2010. Wigmore Hall’s management has significantly strengthened the position of the Competition as one of the best and most prestigious quartet competitions in the world. The fact that the Competition is held under the auspices of Wigmore Hall, the leading venue for chamber music, will strengthen the attraction of the Competition to the best young quartets and enhance its ability to offer excellent career development opportunities to the winning quartets.

The Competition recognises the string quartet tradition as a whole, and requires contestants to perform repertoire from classical, romantic and contemporary composers.

The Competition:

  • attracts string quartets of the highest calibre aged 35 or under, keen to pursue performing careers at the highest level;
  • provides valuable opportunities for feedback from Jury members drawn from chamber music artists of global stature;
  • provides opportunities for participants to meet their peers from other countries and to exchange ideas on performance, technique and repertoire
  • provides a vital public platform from which young musicians can break into the world of professional performance at the highest level.
