Summary

Sandy Burnett presents the third podcast from Wigmore Hall, in conversation with Simon Rowland-Jones: Composer, viola-player, founder member of the Chilingirian Quartet, teacher, and editor of the new Peters Urtext edition of the Haydn String Quartets.

2009 is the 200th anniversary of Haydn’s death. To mark this, Wigmore Hall offers the chance to hear all his string quartets from opus 20 onwards, between Sept 2008 and May 2009, alongside other, selected, Haydn chamber works.

Simon Rowland-Jones discusses the many influences which  inspired Haydn’s musical language, with recorded excerpts of Haydn’s music to illustrate his points.

Music Clips:

  1. Quatuor Ébène - Haydn Op. 64 No. 5 ‘The Lark’
  2. Quatuor Mosaïques - Haydn Op. 20 No. 6 ‘Adagio’
  3. Lindsay String Quartet - Haydn Op. 64. No. 1 ‘Minuet’
  4. Quatuor Mosaïques - Haydn Op. 33 No. 5 ‘Scherzo’
  5. Quatuor Mosaïques - Haydn Op. 20 No. 5
  6. Quatuor Mosaïques - Haydn Op. 76 No. 2 ‘The Fifths’
  7. Quatuor Mosaïques - Haydn Op. 76 No. 1 (last movement)

With thanks to Naïve and Mirare for the use of recordings by the Quatuor Mosaïques and Quatuor Ébène, respectively.
