Devised in 2003, Wigmore Hall will once again be facilitating the extremely popular project, Chamber Challenge for Primary Schools. Devised by Julian West, the project aims to provide an introduction to string quartet music for KS2 students and to give groups of non-specialist primary school children the experience of working alongside a professional ensemble.
Led by Julian West and involving musicians from the Sacconi Quartet, students from Lyndhurst Primary School and Peter Hills with St. Mary’s & St. Paul’s C of E School, Southwark, will create a piece of music which they will perform themselves alongside the professional string quartet in a performance at their school at the end of the project.
The project aims to develop creative musical skills and enthusiasm for music as well as building confidence and group-work skills. It supports the national curriculum for music at Key Stage 2 including composing, listening (an introduction to music for string quartet), performance and group work (learning to work as part of an ensemble). It is integral to Chamber Challenge to support the teachers in building skills and confidence in leading creative music activities and the project includes teacher training sessions and accompanying teachers’ pack and CD.
The project will culminate in performances on Wednesday 1 December at Lyndhurst Primary School and Friday 3 December at Peter Hills.
