About this concert
Formosa is the old Portuguese name for Taiwan, reflecting the shared heritage of the founder members of this group. But since the word specifically means ‘beautiful’, it could as well apply to the two quartets in their programme: the Ravel with its cross-rhythmed gamelan colours, and the Dvorák with its melodies (as the composer said) ‘whispered by God’.
