Matthias Goerne continues his monumental project, performing 200 songs across three seasons. Schubert’s songs number more than 600, representing over 115 poets – from those of international standing to those known only within his own circle.
A pioneer of the German Romantic Lied, Schubert influenced generations of composers after him, including Schumann, Brahms, Wolf and Strauss – his ability to reflect poetic expression always presiding over vocal display.
His flair for choosing and setting texts, his instinct for vocal expression and his sophisticated piano-writing resulted in a body of work that has transcended its drawing-room origins, and has won a cherished place in the vocal repertoire.
