Haydn Quartets and Mozart Quintets

A string quartet named after one of the supreme quartet composers would be running risks unless its playing was exceptional – as the playing of this group undoubtedly is. Using gut strings, classical bows, and period-conscious scholarship, its recent recordings of Haydn on the Hyperion label have been described as ‘marvellous’ (Goldberg Magazine) and ‘superlative’ (The Strad).
In this weekend residency it examines all the quartets of the Opus 20 set known as the ‘Sun’ and generally considered a landmark in Haydn’s output, encompassing a grander scale and deeper expressivity than any of his earlier quartet writing.
The set comes coupled with all six of Mozart’s string quintets, with the Canadian violist Steven Dann.
