IMS Prussia Cove 40th Anniversary

Welcome to the 40th anniversary celebrations for IMS Prussia Cove, an anniversary which falls neatly in the same year as the centenary of the birth of our founder, the great Hungarian violinist and conductor Sándor Végh. Végh’s vision was of a haven where musicians could work seriously and idealistically on music, without the outside distractions of city or conservatory life.

We have tried very hard to continue the realisation of that vision, beavering away in the wilds of Cornwall for six weeks a year, among the most inspiring surroundings imaginable, located conveniently (or rather, inconveniently) miles away from any form of urban life. We hope to continue over the coming years to offer to as many students as possible the set of musical values that underlie everything we teach down there. Sándor Végh felt that he imbibed those values from Hubay and Casals, who in turn received them from Brahms, Joachim, Liszt, Faure, Ysaÿe and others – not bad musical grandfathers!

For this one day only, we are emerging blinking into the bright lights of the great city to give the famous Wigmore audience a taste of what we are trying to achieve during the Master Classes and Open Chamber Music. Having done this, we shall scurry back into our lair until cautiously re-emerging (even more briefly) for the Open Chamber Music tour in the first week of October. I hope that this IMS Wigmore Day will be somewhat instructive, a tad challenging, and very enjoyable.
