Kevin Volans

Wigmore Hall presents a day-long celebration to mark the 60th birthday of South African born (now naturalised Irish) composer Kevin Volans.
Featuring an interview and film as well as concerts, we explore Volans’s music – much of it coloured by his South African upbringing, though he has said he has tried to Africanise Western music more than vice versa.
He marries folk music and minimalism to great effect in the first string quartet, White Man Sleeps, which has become a contemporary classic, and was one of the best-selling classical discs of 1993.
String quartets have continued to form an important role in his output – his tenth was completed in 2006, commissioned by RTÉ, while for dance he has composed scores for choreographers Siobhan Davies and Shobana Jeyasingh.
