Expressive nuance, technical precision and intellectual integrity are among the qualities that make Ariel Lanyi’s pianism so compelling. The London-based musician, who received the prestigious Prix Serdang in 2023 from the great Austrian pianist Rudolf Buchbinder, returns to Wigmore Hall with a typically thoughtful, utterly engrossing programme. He begins by exploring two strikingly characterful works, training the spotlight on the contrasting ideas of Haydn’s Sonata in G and George Benjamin’s free-flowing Fantasy on Iambic Rhythm, before scaling the vast summit of Beethoven’s technically demanding, creatively daring Diabelli Variations.
