Two of Haydn’s most popular quartets are calling-cards for a welcome return visit by an established ensemble. Dedicated to the violinist and merchant Johann Tost – who found a publisher for the set – the Op. 64 series includes the piece named for its birdsong-like opening melodic phrase on the first violin, while the Op. 76 group includes what became the Austrian and subsequently the German national anthem.
