Overview

Beethoven’s Variations on themes from Judas Maccabaeus and Die Zauberflöte were written in Berlin in 1796, the latter chosen because it was the favourite opera of Prussia’s King Friedrich Wilhelm II.

Jean-Guihen Queyras and Alexander Melnikov conclude each half of this programme with two forward-looking sonatas conceived in 1815 for Joseph Linke, the brilliant Silesian cellist.
