Brahms made telling use of the viola’s ability to play sonorous chords when transcribing his Op. 120 Clarinet Sonatas for the instrument, while Georges Enescu exploited the instrument’s virtuosity in the piece he wrote in 1906 for the Paris Conservatoire viola concours. Lawrence Power starts on violin for Stravinsky’s arrangement of music from his ballet The Fairy’s Kiss.
