While the works here span three epochs in Beethoven’s creative lifetime – early, middle and late – each is hallmarked by its astonishing range of invention and fantasy. Wit and mischief flow though the first work in the Elias String Quartet’s programme, which yields to the deeply personal emotions woven into the last of the ‘Razumovsky’ Quartets and the transcendent music of Op. 131.
