Overview

Four intricate fugues by JS Bach, supreme masterworks of the genre, and Turina’s The Bullfighter’s Prayer, originally conceived in 1925 for a quartet of Spanish lutes, provide evocative companions to Shostakovich’s Third String Quartet in Cuarteto Casals’s absorbing programme. The Spanish ensemble ends with the emotionally complex fifth movement of the Soviet composer’s 1946 score, widely regarded as a reaction against tyranny.
