Overview

Girolamo Frescobaldi’s improvisatory toccatas and free-flowing canzoni, landmarks of the early Baroque, inspired later generations of composers, as did Domenico Scarlatti’s keyboard sonatas, notably so in the case of João de Sousa Carvalho. Mahan Esfahani, recipient of the prestigious Wigmore Medal, traces lines of influence that connect the three composers in his programme and highlights the resounding individuality of their music.
