    Overview

Martin Luther’s attack on the corrupt Renaissance papacy and the resulting schism that divided the Roman Catholic and Protestant churches set the foundations for the works in The Sixteen’s programme. While Johann Sebastian Bach enhanced the Lutheran liturgy with his remarkable sacred cantatas, William Byrd expressed a longing for the return of the old Catholic faith to Elizabeth I’s England in works tinged with regret and defiance.
