Overview

These three compositions chart the evolution of Beethoven’s deep creative investment in the string quartet. The Elias String Quartet begins with the sixth of the composer’s Op. 18 quartets, a mix of classical form and romantic expression, conceived in 1800, before moving to the last of his late quartets, a radiant summation of a lifetime’s work, and the spellbinding second ‘Razumovsky’ quartet.
