Overview

During the late 1600s, French authors promoted the value of ‘natural’ emotional expression in the arts, reinforcing a trend already embraced by composers such as Louis Couperin and soon to be adopted by a new generation of musicians, Joseph-Nicolas-Pancrace Royer among them. Christian Zacharias recalls Francis Poulenc’s admiration for Couperin’s art and the music of the French harpsichord school in a lecture-recital of dazzling delights and enticing surprises.
