Overview

While almost totally deaf by 1818, tormented by tinnitus and frequently ill, Beethoven overcame his many difficulties to create visionary works of inexhaustible invention and expressive richness. The Elias String Quartet concludes the latest episode in its season-long survey of the composer’s complete quartets with an exploration of the extreme emotional contrasts of his Op. 130, performed here with the ‘Great Fugue’ as its towering finale.
