Overview

Today’s programme arises from Susan Tomes’s new book, Nocturnes and the Fascination of Night Music, published by Yale University Press in March 2026. In the book, she considers our current obsession with ‘sleep music’ and traces a line back through history to where the genre began with John Field’s gentle Nocturnes for piano. In this concert she will play some classic nocturnes by Field, Chopin and Fauré, but also some contrasting examples of music showing that not every composer has viewed night as a peaceful time.
