About the Wigmore Hall/Kohn Foundation International Song Competition
In the 11 years since the first Wigmore Hall/Kohn Foundation International Song Competition, the event has grown in status and remit.
This Competition recognises the song tradition as a whole and requires contestants to sing and play in at least three languages. At the same time it honours the lied’s place at the heart of the song repertoire and celebrates the Shakespearean stature of Schubert in the genre.
The Song Competition :
- • Attracts singers and pianists of the highest standing, keen to embark on significant recital careers.
- • Provides a valuable opportunity for jury feedback and guidance
- • Promotes the interchange of ideas between artists who would otherwise be working in isolation all over the world.
- • Provides an important platform for public performance and the expansion of repertoire.
Dr. Ralph Kohn on the 2009 Song Competition
"This year’s Wigmore Hall/Kohn Foundation International Song Competition attracted a record number of 150 applicants from 41 countries around the World.
The quality of the young singers and pianists who presented themselves was of the highest standard and our eminently distinguished Jury was presented, as a consequence, with some very difficult decisions. But Solomonic wisdom prevailed as always on such occasions, and we are confident that the prize winners will all go through life making great careers.
We expect to be thrilled in the years to come with their artistic performances of the art song, which will enrich the lives of audiences all over the world! "
