Overview

Although linked tenuously to Beethoven’s ‘Kreutzer’ Sonata, it was Tolstoy’s eponymous novella that inspired Janáček to compose his First String Quartet. The work, which conveys Tolstoy’s harrowing first-person depiction of raging jealousy, makes the ideal partner to Beethoven’s monumental Op. 130, performed by the Jerusalem Quartet complete with its original finale, the mighty Grosse Fugue.
