Overview

Paul Ben-Haim, a seminal figure in Israel’s cultural life, has held a place in the repertoire since his death in 1984. Yet his close contemporary, the composer and ethnomusicologist Alberto Hemsi, was all but forgotten until the ARC Ensemble made a captivating recording of works such as the vibrant Arie Antiche, based on traditional melodies from the former Ottoman Empire, and the yearning Méditation for cello and piano.
